Firefighters battle a Lakewood fire at a commercial building next to an apartment on the 115th block of Bridgeport Way Southwest on June 10, 2024. Crews are still battling what they called a two-alarm building fire that is next to a Lakewood apartment on the 115th block of Bridgeport Way Southwest. The fire began shortly before midnight Monday, according to West Pierce Fire & Rescue Deputy Chief Hallie McCurdy.
Fire crews said the building was starting to reignite and they could not go inside to figure out exactly where the fire was, so they had to cut holes into the building to create what they call a trench between the main building and the apartment building. An apartment complex next to the building was evacuated due to smoke concerns for residents. About a dozen people are being sheltered in place inside a city bus.
Bridgeport Way is closed in both directions, and the fire captain said it will likely be closed for a few hours. "This building's been remodeled and added onto several times, so there's a lot of pockets in there that are hard to get to," McCurdy said. "It's just a matter of finding the right spots."
