Hewitt has fended off multiple primary challenges since she first took office in 2008.

Longtime Lake County Board member Diane Hewitt will apparently advance to the general election, sweeping the District 8 Democratic primary election against former Waukegan alderman and business owner Charles Rukstales.

The 69-year-old from Zion won a three-person primary in 2012, and also won in the 2016 and 2020 general elections with more than 70% of the vote. There is no Republican candidate for District 8, so Hewitt will likely retain her long-held seat come November.
