Recently, Lafayette 148’s creative director Emily Smith found out that the brand’s original building—at 148 Lafayette Street—used to house a printing press before it was a garment factory. “I took it as an inspiration to build off this idea of paper and what we could do with it, and interpret it through clothing,” Smith said during an appointment at the brand’s flagship on Greene Street in SoHo.
It turns out that paper is a great inspiration for clothes. A brown paper bag inspired a wrinkly linen-blend trench coat. Colored tissue paper was evident in a simple sleeveless shift made of two layers of silk, one pink and one light beige, shown with a pair of white sheer trousers, and another in shades of yellow citrine, which also picked up on the undercurrent of ’90s minimalist looks that could be seen elsewhere this past fashion week.
A shaggy cotton crochet sweater and cardigan were reminiscent of shredded paper; a white cotton pleated gown could have its roots in origami and would make a fine wedding dress for a tropical bride. The standouts of the collection were a pleated paper-thin leather short-sleeve button-down shirt and matching trousers, and a green pleated blouse with curved sleeves and matching skirt that was elegant in its shape and bold in its choice of color.
“I just believe a modern woman is so busy and she wants things that she can wear in and out of different things,” Smith explained. She created a tightly edited collection of beautiful, modern, wearable pieces that are likely to go the long run in any woman’s wardrobe. You can’t really ask for more than that.

Comparing forms of neighborhood instability as predictors of violence in Richmond, VAViolence events tend to cluster together geospatially. Various features of communities and their residents have been highlighted as explanations for such clustering in the literature. One reliable correlate of violence is neighborhood instability. Research on neighborhood instability indicates that such instability can be measured as property tax delinquency, yet no known work has contrasted external and internal sources of instability in predicting neighborhood violence. To this end we collected data on violence events, company and personal property tax delinquency, population density, race, income, food stamps, and alcohol outlets for each of Richmond, Virginia’s 148 neighborhoods. We constructed and compared ordinary least-squares (OLS) to geographically weighted regression (GWR) models before constructing a final algorithm-selected GWR model. Our results indicated that the tax delinquency of company-owned properties (e.g., rental homes, apartments) was the only variable in our model (R2=0.62) that was associated with violence in all but four Richmond neighborhoods. We replicated this analysis using violence data from a later point in time which yielded largely identical results. These findings indicate that external sources of neighborhood instability may be more important to predicting violence than internal sources. Our results further provide support for social disorganization theory and point to opportunities to expand this framework.
