The meeting comes after de León fought with community activist Jason Reedy at a holiday event in Lincoln Heights.

While de León has been formally censured by the council, the decision is largely symbolic and currently bears no penalties under the City Charter. The council cannot remove a member. There is a recall effort against de León that is in the process of collecting signatures.

Harris-Dawson said in a tweet on Friday that he was not "ready to excuse" de León's behavior, with Councilwoman Eunisses Hernandez agreeing. The council requires 10 members for a quorum -- which means it can afford to lose four members to still hold a meeting, with the Sixth District seat vacant after Nury Martinez's resignation.

No council member has publicly voiced interest in challenging Krekorian for the council presidency. The council will also hold an election for president pro tempore, the council's second-in-command. That post is currently held by Councilman Curren Price. Embattled Councilman Kevin de León -- who has defied widespread calls to resign for his role in the City Hall racism scandal -- made an unexpected appearance at Friday's meeting, his first time showing up in the chamber since Oct. 11. But protesters were quick to shout for de León to leave, and de León was no longer present after a conversation with Council President Paul Krekorian and a 45-minute recess.

Jason Reedy harassed, chased, cornered, bumped, head butted & got in face of Latino KDL then fled the crime scene before cops came. Anyone praising the violence of racist Jason Reedy is disgusting. Reedy pushed thru the doors then attacked, now cries he’s the victim. ResignKDL

They are calling out former Comrade Eunisses Hernandez to break quorum.

This was a set up by De Leon and he should be fired now that i think about it

I dont like De Leon he should resign but he was attacked. He was punched and headbutted by Reedy, violence is not acceptable.

Totally misleading headline! Nobody just fought. A certain person got in another persons face while yelling, taunting, and agitating the other person. A physical encounter was impossible to avoid, and in fact was probably necessary to remove the aggressor from the situation.

Controller Mejia pays thugs. Reedy is under Mejia’s employ

Be honest. Show the whole video. Jason got in his face and didn't let Kevin move. Jason got what he was asking for.

He wont resign because he won't have a job. He's a career politician and been bouncing around from one spot to another. Its how he makes his money.

De León gets only coal for Christmas.

Never really liked de León until now.

Kevin must resign but that doesn’t mean he can be bullied by angry protesters. He’s a public official and if for any of you is ok to do that then, set that precedent and the next one may be you. We must respect to be respected and that’s what Mr. Reedy must know. Well he is awfully racist? Maybe he should keep those thoughts to his inside voice.
