The organization that coordinates the city’s emergency medical services issued new protocols this week amid a crush of COVID-19 patients flooding hospitals and straining the 911 system.“Emergency Departments are severely overcrowded, and transporting patients pronounced on the scene only increases ED workload and potentially exposes ED staff and patients to COVID19,” the Regional Emergency Medical Services Council of New York City said in a press release.
He said that for paramedics working in the field, the choice for treating patients in cardiac arrest is to get them immediately to a hospital or to “stay and play” to work on resuscitation on-site. He said people have been moving toward “stay and play,” and an upcoming study will compare the two approaches.
It’s cruel, but when the hospitals are overloaded, there has to be a protocol. That’s why we should do everything we can to prevent hospital overload. It’s the same as triaging ventilators.

First of all. Do no harm. EMT’s are under the orders and protocols of their ER doctor thru a specialty licensed ER nurse. Never would this happen. All pts will get full medical attention. At scene, with witnessed fall, of down time extended a death can be called (so rare)
NYC is doing ir too. It’s called triage. The first rule is those who will need the most resources are put aside for those who have a greater chance of survival. Until you have had to make those hard choices and unless you are ready to work a shift in my scrubs you have no say.

Cardiac arrest is one of the symptoms of the virus.
It must have a toll on them including here a lot of us whinging about the virus lock down people are having heart attacks accidents not to mention Cancer I hope my extended family come out of of it alive at the moment I'm thinking about people who lost there homes in fires .

Not a new policy. People were freaking out when it was posted about FDNY doing this. Cardiac arrest patients get treated on scene. Their results of recovery are much elevated when treated immediately with drugs/electricity/CRP rather than rushing them to hospital.
