In a Sunday CBS Face the Nation interview, the Arizona centrist said she was done with parties altogether and will remain an Independent for the foreseeable future. Sinema has helped Republicans in some of the Senate's most crucial legislative battles since becoming an Independent. Her announcement shows that her help only goes so far, however, as she does not plan to take the major step of joining the Republican party.
“I would suggest that what I tried to do in the United States Senate right is to show that we have differences, differences which should be celebrated,” Sinema said. “That’s an important part of a democracy. But those differences shouldn’t stop us from getting things done.” She added that her main priority is to restore Americans' faith in government, by showing that different sides can work together.
"It's demonstrating to Arizonans and the American public that we can restore faith in our government by working together and solving real challenges that impact the lives of the people that we serve," she said."So there are topics of concern for me, immigration, obviously permitting, those are very important. But equally important to me is restoring faith in our institutions, in our governments, and helping Americans see that the system is worth protecting and saving.
Sinema, elected to the Senate in 2018, has proven to be a thorn in the Democrats' side, jeopardizing the party's plans even while a party member. She left the Democratic Party in December 2022. If she decides to run in 2024, she will face opposition from Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego and Republican Sheriff Mark Lamb, Politico reported.
