One of the most famous magazine covers in history was the January 1973 edition of National Lampoon featuring a dog named Mr. Cheeseface with a gun to his head and the caption, “If you don’t buy this magazine, we’ll kill the dog.” It was dark humor, expected from the legendary magazine. But a not-so-legendary politician killing a dog and using that story in the hope people will buy her book? Well, even in this caustic day and age, that is unexpected. Step on up, South Dakota Gov.
Normally a politician who can unite a nation as fast as you can say “doggone” would be a front-runner for a presidential ticket. But Noem has united the nation in horror and disbelief. Noem was not forced to confess to shooting her 14-month-old puppy. She boasted about it to prove she’s willing to do the “difficult, messy and ugly” things. But this only means she shunned training the puppy or giving it away to a rescue group. Instead she killed it for behaving like a puppy.
