The decision came just days after nine men were arrested on suspicion of selling more than 40 Komodo dragons for about $35,000 each, possibly for dubious medicinal purposes.

By Michael Brice-Saddler Michael Brice-Saddler General Assignment Reporter Email Bio Follow April 2 at 9:46 PM Tourists to Indonesia will likely be barred from the popular Komodo Island in January 2020 — a decision seemingly impelled by recent reports of Komodo dragons being stolen and smuggled overseas, potentially for dubious medicinal purposes, according to local media.

The decision to close the island came just days after nine men were arrested on suspicion of selling more than 40 Komodo dragons for about $35,000 each, local police told Tempo. Officials said the reptiles, which are the largest known species of lizard in existence and only found in the wild in East Indonesia, are “usually” sold to Asian buyers.

But Bryan Fry, an associate professor for the University of Queensland’s school of biological sciences, told The Post this process is more complicated and less plausible than it sounds.

According to Tempo, local officials hope curtailing tourist exposure to the island will give the government time to bolster protections for the dragons, whose population was last determined to be “vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species, which measures the world’s biodiversity.

Some reports indicate there are about 6,000 of the dragons left in existence, Allan said, and fewer than 500 of those are females capable of breeding. Selling animals for trade can have a “major and sudden impact” on their populations, especially if reproductive females are among them.

Good

Why can’t people leave animals alone

Their is valid medical research into the Komodo dragon. Their saliva is a cocktail of deadly germs yet they are immune to it. Figuring out how their immune system deals with such things is valuable medical research.

Once again, the most dangerous species on earth? Fuckin humans.

How the hell do you smuggle a Komodo Dragon? Not exactly a right fit for your back pocket.

Just genetically defective alligators anyway, make a purse out of them

I see that sassy social media person is working today.

I misread that the first time. I was all 'What's wrong with snuggling a dragon? They need love too.'

That’s too bad for tourists but good for the dragon. It cannot be helped to protect it from being smuggled.

I hate people.

Leave the dragons alone!! 😢

again'....money, money, money, it, changes humans, in2, a self center, person!

How? Aren't these things incredibly poisonous and big? The human capacity for doucheness astounds me

Good.

I’m sure they make charming pets. :-|

Brother? Could you spare a Dragon?

damn. to be fair tho having one of those things would be pretty sick

Stay away dang 🐉

Maybe they were looking for dragon kimonos? Bet opening the package was a shock

dang it

We can’t have nice things

This is horrible. What are ways we can improve this situation?
