University Hospital News

Fresh Start Surgical Gifts,Health

There are so many kids in the world who need surgeries but can't afford them. That's where the innovative Fresh Start Surgical Gifts program comes in. They partner with several hospitals in the U.S. and University Hospital is one of them.

This will be University Hospital ’s third time participating in the program in just the last year. Starting Saturday, five kids will be getting surgeries for free.

Fresh Start funds the families’ transportation and lodging while the hospitals provide the space, staff and time. “I’ve done a couple of cleft palate, cochlear implants, reconstruction of the ears and stuff like that,” said University Hospital Surgical Services Supervisor Sandra Diaz-Reyes. For 18 years, Diaz-Reyes has dedicated her life to helping save and serve other people through surgery, and there’s no one who loves volunteering more.
