Automakers are facing a challenge with the newest generation of drivers: The teenagers of today aren't in a hurry to get their first car, let alone a driver's license. by JennaFryer

showed that in 2018 approximately 61% of 18-year-olds in the U.S. had a driver’s license, down from 80% percent in 1983. The number of 16-year-olds with licenses decreased from 46% to 25% in the same period.

Although market research firm J.D. Power found that millennials accounted for 32% of new car sales in 2020, higher than any other age group and ahead of baby boomers for the first time, Gen Z is content waiting for wheels. The automakers are addressing the issue with the obvious — a generation raised on technology likely will be most interested in cars with the newest features and connectivity.

“I think what is important to them is staying connected in a safe way,” Rushbrook said. “The vehicle is an extension of their iPhone or their screen device, they want to stay connected and bring their music and everything else with them into the car.” “Driving a fun car doesn’t have to be the most expensive, most powerful car. There’s lots of different ways to make cars appealing and that doesn’t go away.”a nearly 10,000-square foot garage full of classic

Kleis was given more responsibility over the years and used his time to learn as much as he could. He can change a transmission, replace an alternator, diagnose the weird sounds and, in his free time, he is restoring a 1938 Packard Six initially purchased brand new by his great-grandparents.

JennaFryer Great!!, they can use public transportation and think they are saving the environment. In the meantime, us Gen Xers will have more space to drive our normal-people gasoline-powered cars!

JennaFryer If ya live in the city, public transport is a better option. If ya live in suburbia or rural country, the car is the only option besides moving to the city.

JennaFryer Where is this? They are not buying cars their parents are.

JennaFryer Smart move - good for them. Cars have been reduced to stripped down, poorly made shitty corporate money grabs since the 80's. 5 times the money for a fraction of the quality. I don't blame the kids these days one bit for passing on them.

JennaFryer Both of my teenagers had zero desire to get their license and no desire of a car - many of my friends kids were the same - this generation is very different from ours - very odd but they flat out don’t care. They can uber anywhere they want and no car payment no insurance
