Kickstarter-funded ‘The Steve Keene Art Book’ To Be Published In June

Efram calls crowdfunding an essential element of the book’s final form. Having worked on numerous artistic projects “which rarely got made exactly as how the artists I was advocating for or I envisioned them,” he says that with crowdfunding, “you lay out your plan, and if there is enough interest, even significant goals can be reached, hopefully with as little compromise as to the concept as possible and with no transfer of ownership.

To gather material that went into the final book, Efram had to seek out Keene’s artwork, using Instagram, where over 300 people uploaded their pieces with the hashtagfor possible inclusion. Keene has sold his work for as little as $1. Efram encouraged Kickstarter backers and other Keene fans to send him their artwork to be photographed for inclusion in the book. For Efram, the process of choosing which artwork to include was a “huge lift,” given the numerous options.

Efram says of the Hat & Beard Press partnership for the title, “We share the belief that this project can be marketed in a very similar way to an indie rock record.” To that end, the book is sized like a vinyl LP box set. Efram hopes to hold Steve Keene art shows at galleries and music venues in select cities in conjunction with the release.
