Hardliners are set to tighten control of Iran this week in a parliamentary elect...

DUBAI - Hardliners are set to tighten control of Iran this week in a parliamentary election stacked in their favor, as the leadership closes ranks in a deepening confrontation with Washington.

Such wide command of the power apparatus would open an era in which the elite Revolutionary Guards, already omnipresent in the life of the nation, hold ever greater sway in political, social and economic affairs. Faced with little choice, many voters are likely to be focused on bread-and-butter issues, in an economy hurt by U.S. President Donald Trump’s “maximum pressure” policy toward Iran.

But Khamenei’s loyalist candidates are backed by core supporters of the establishment who identify in all aspects of life with the Islamic Republic, insiders said. But pro-reform voters are dismayed by disarray in their camp and the failure of pragmatist President Hassan Rouhani to abide by an election pledge to ease social and political restrictions.

The slate of hardline candidates is dominated by the Guards, who answer directly to Khamenei, and their affiliated Basij militia, insiders and analysts say.

Many countries also have mechanisms to confirm the eligibility of candidates. In Iran, according to parliament's resolution, it approves people who are qualified base on some terms and Guardian Council is responsible for enforcing this resolution

So that’s why Trudeau went to Iran. To get information how to rig the next election. Interesting

Iran’s elections follow the Mullahs’ rule; you are free to vote for the candidates that we choose for you! Other candidates are banned!

Only if we hadn't overthrown their government...

🤣😂🤣

Why have they been banned is Iran 🇮🇷 controlling the opposition?

Hey that's gonna be our election model soon! Unless you're a billionaire next time around no way you get on the ballot! Only billionaires are in touch with the general public.

Moderates are eliminated because of realDonaldTrump; only the radical elements are left! This is what happens when you have a clueless narcissist in the WH! Only self serving measures, nothing in the national interest

Please take this cotton out of your mouth because there is no legitimacy among the iranian people

This is actually very unlikely as Iranians are not going to vote for ensuring that the world will recognize his lack of authority. This would be the beginning of the end of this horror regime that has blood of thousands of Iranians on its hands. WeStandWithPahlavi

Uh huh.

The Iranian govt is a state within a state...they have captured the resources that should benefit the bigger state which is the local Iranian people into a state of a few people connected to the theocracy and its military machine...a big mockery of the Koran also...

You should sub Farsi or translate for us Iranians too.

It actually does look like a very successful show on Comedy Central channel. I bet it will have a high rate of viewers. The irony is when you're looking at these people who are actually living the role of having one person decide their own destiny.

Reuters covers this like it’s a real democratic election, but it’s just a staged show.

We won't!

Is there a problem with your site? I click the articles and I'm not seeing anything.

There is so much wrong with a system which calls some 'bloke' a supreme leader.

Iran controls every aspect of elections already this is not news.

Surprised, NOT. The more conservative leaders of Iran had misgivings about the JCPOA. When Trump abandoned the agreement, it solidified their views that the US couldn’t be trusted. Killing Qasem Soleimani didn’t help the progressives in Iran. Life is what one makes of it.
