Joe Kennedy was once thought to be a lock to defeat Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey. But Markey's policy-heavy campaign is gaining traction.

BOSTON — Joe Kennedy was once thought to be such a lock to defeat Sen. Ed Markey that there was widespread speculation in Massachusetts that Markey might just retire to avoid a humbling end.

But authoring the Green New Deal earned Markey the very public support of New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — the Democratic Party's leading millennial. Ocasio-Cortez cut a television ad for Markey at the end of July, and the campaign has spent more than $240,000 putting it on the air. "I could keep going on and on, because I have more than 500 laws that are on the books," Markey said during a recent interview on the podcast "Lovett or Leave It."

After spending $2.4 million on TV ads this spring, the congressman quietly replaced his ad consultant with Tad Devine in July. Devine is a longtime Kennedy ally, known for producing award-winning television ads for the late Sen. Ted Kennedy, the congressman’s great uncle. The next day, the Boston Globe ran a story that showed, based on travel records, that Markey is in Massachusetts less than any member of the state's congressional delegation.

Kennedy’s campaign pushes back on claims that he's lost his wide polling margin. They contend early internal polling never showed him with such a wide lead over Markey.

RepJoeKennedy is not more or less progressive than EdMarkey. Especially during a pandemic, he has to be openly and loudly opposed to an antivaxer like RobertKennedyJr or the Kennedy brand may as well be about supporting QAnon.

Still don't know what he has done in Congess

Its better to stand with the police

No one runs for office thinking it would be a lock. This is just a terrible tweet. You run for office because you think you can do a better job than the person who has it and you make your case to the voters. I started with Markey but he has run a terrible campaign. I'm with Joe.

Amazing who would have ever imagined people care about policy. You learn something new everyday./s

A clear example of thinking you’re able to punch above your weight glass. That seat was waiting for Joe; he just didn’t have the patience to wait for it. No good reason to replace an effective Senator. Personal ambition isn’t enough.

Joe Kennedy is so unbelievably phony. Cringe-Olympic

I don’t know who thought this was a “lock”. Did you speak to anyone living in Massachusetts?

SHORTER: Markey is progressive and that is what people want.

A family ties and a passing resemblance for Ron Weasley aren't enough?

I’ll take a Kennedy any day, especially Joe! F the GOP!!!

TellYaFatha

don't stop bullying Joe Kennedy the strategy is working

The GOP decided the Bush family was done 4 years ago... the Kennedy Family has been sucking the life out of the Democratic Party my entire life... it is time to move on..

That's right.

Another way of saying Kennedy's campaign is devoid of policy issues.
