Growing up between Washington, D.C., and the New York City suburbs due to her parents’ jobs, Canfield took part in a children’s Shakespeare theater because all the kids in the neighborhood were doing it. At 7 years old, “I asked my mom how you became a good actress, and she said, ‘Well, the best actors go to the Yale School of Drama,’” she says. “Okay, well I guess I want to go to the Yale School of Drama.
Thus Canfield waits and watches Strong, mirroring their characters’ dynamic. “He might not consciously involve me, but I try to involve myself in a way that’s invasive or disruptive,” she says. “She’s one step ahead of him, in his needs. So whatever process Jeremy’s in, I just try to clock it. When he is going through the Kendall roller coaster, that makes it really exciting for me.”
