with the Wall Street Journal, Burns reveals that he hasn’t watched “The Last Dance” and he fundamentally disagrees with how it was made.
Michael Jordan’s production company, Jump 23, is listed as a partner on the series, meaning that he could have had some say in how it portrayed him. Burns said that he would “never, never, never, never” agree to a partnership like that on a documentary. “If you are there influencing the very fact of it getting made, it means that certain aspects that you don’t necessarily want in aren’t going to be in, period,” he said. “And that’s not the way you do good journalism…and it’s certainly not the way you do good history, my business.”Burns won an Emmy for his own sports miniseries “Baseball” in 1994, and three more for “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea” and “The Civil War.
“The Last Dance” has been a huge hit for ESPN while most of the network’s sports programming has been shuttered during the coronavirus pandemic. An
It’s entertainment.
He’s absolutely right about the journalistic conflict of interest, but I still find the docuseries to be thoroughly entertaining.
Well, Ken hasn’t seen the series. He can’t have an opinion on it.
Why? Because it is good? And popular?
Who cares what a guy named Ken burns thinks. Like seriously
Neat
His Covid-19 documentary in a couple of years will be awesome I’m sure.
I understand the Documentary Film is episodic and focuses on one Bulls player per hour, but it’d be great to eventually get a linear version of TheLastDance.
He’s right. It’s nothing but a love letter to Jordan.
Stopped reading at 'Burns reveals he hasn't watched The Last Dance...'
He’s missing out on one of the best produced documentary series EVER. So we’ll told - you don’t need to be a sports fan to enjoy.
And that's not how you do good hair color Ken.
Are we not allowed to talk about his hair? Did I miss the window to mention it? Dude, it’s weird.
“Slams” = offers valid critique on the concept of Documentary as truly documenting a story in a journalistic sense vs a more propaganda-like entertainment focused story paid for and therefore influenced by the subject(s) of the story being told.
Uh..Who’s Ken Burns?
Ken should research how to do a good toupee
I disagree with 'slams'. A documentarian stating that he wouldn't allow the subject of a documentary to have power over what is included/excluded seems pretty reasonable to me.
espn BleacherReport PBS I think Ken Burns thinks he's the only one who can have a great sports documentary. Lighten up Ken.
so here for a Ken Burns burn
More like not how you put ppl to sleep! Ask herzog or Morris about what a good doc vs journalisms or news.
Can I still like it?
It’s not supposed to be journalism tho, just sports history/ infotainment
