When North Korea lofted a missile over Japan in October, Megumi Morohoshi decided she was going to buy a bomb shelter, joining a small but growing number of Japanese who are taking security into their own hands

Morohoshi had been concerned about the ever-present danger from Japan's earthquakes, and she had been wanting to expand the house to accommodate her three young children.

"I'd always wanted a room like this, but then in October I made up my mind that I needed to hurry up and buy one." Even after more than 70 years, memories persist in Japan of intense bombing during World War II, including the only atomic detonations in combat. The year's most active threat to the Japanese archipelago has been North Korea, which launched dozens of missiles and is said to be preparing for its first nuclear test since 2017.

Nao's managing director, Yoshimitsu Koyano, thinks Japan is sorely unprepared for the risk of bombardment. Morohoshi's unit, delivered late last month, is an austere white box with "CRISIS-01" emblazoned on the side, with external cameras mounted on it. It juts out of the bottom of their narrow three-story home in Saitama.

Alone by herself in a bomb shelter... With a mask, what a clown.. 🤡

I mean, it's about as big as the average apartment there? Plus it protects your head from wildly inaccurate third world missiles. What a steal!

North Korea did not criticise ex-South Korean leader for 'abandoning' dogs gifted by Kim Jong UnSocial media users have shared altered screenshots of a North Korean state media programme alongside a false claim that they show Pyongyang criticising former South Korean president Moon Jae-in for 'abandoning' two dogs given to him in 2018 by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The posts surfaced online after Moon announced he would return the dogs to the South Korean government after it failed to agree on who should pay for the canines' care. However, a search found the original North Korean television report was about Kim condemning South Korea for holding joint military drills with the United States.
