Kasey Kleyn spends 16th birthday preparing for Rattler 250, now scheduled for Saturday

JON JOHNSON KINSTON – Kasey Kleyn spent his 16th birthday on Friday at the South Alabama Speedway, thousands of miles away from his hometown of Qunicy, Washington.

Kleyn was asked if ever in his wildest dreams could he have imagined spending such a significant birthday at a race track in Alabama. “Back home, I race with all the older guys … all the people who win a bunch of races every weekend … so it’s not too intimidating,” Kleyn said. “You’re just more focused on trying to learn the track and get your car as fast as you can. You know those big names will race you cleanly, so you really don’t have to worry.”

Kleyn’s father raced Super Late Model cars, thus he became interested in the sport at a young age – first racing go-karts. It was when he moved up the ranks to eventually compete in Jr. Late Model and Pro Late Model races that Kleyn realized it was something he wanted to pursue seriously.He juggles trying to be a regular student in high school to racing with professionals on weekends. Some of his friends understand what he goes through, others don’t really get it.

“Like the heat, when it’s 80 degrees and humid here … it’s really, really hard for me because back home there’s no humidity at all,” Kleyn said. “And so when you’ve got the heat and humidity here it gets really hot and it’s really easy to get dehydrated.
