Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (kaj33), a friend of late martial arts star Bruce Lee, believes Quentin Tarantino was sloppy, somewhat racist and shirked his responsibility to basic truth in OnceUponATimeInHollywood

Remember that time Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. kidney-punched a waiter for serving soggy croutons in his tomato soup? How about the time the Dalai Lama got wasted and spray-painted “Karma Is a Beach” on the Tibetan ambassador’s limo? Probably not, since they never happened. But they could happen if a filmmaker decides to write those scenes into his or her movie.

This controversy has left me torn. Tarantino is one of my favorite filmmakers because he is so bold, uncompromising and unpredictable. There’s a giddy energy in his movies of someone who loves movies and wants you to love them, too. I attend each Tarantino film as if it were an event, knowing that his distillation of the ’60s and ’70s action movies will be much more entertaining than a simple homage.

During our years of friendship, he spoke passionately about how frustrated he was with the stereotypical representation of Asians in film and TV. The only roles were for inscrutable villains or bowing servants. In, Paladin’s faithful Chinese servant goes by the insulting name of “Hey Boy” . He was replaced in season four by a female character referred to as “Hey Girl” . Asian men were portrayed as sexless accessories to a scene, while the women were subservient.

kaj33 Exactly

kaj33 It wasn’t a documentary.

kaj33 Dude... he was lifting weights with you man kaj33 just stop this Variety

kaj33 It's bullshit. There's nothing racist about it.

kaj33 OUATIH OnceUponATimeInHollywood BruceLee

kaj33 Come on And like... his cause of death was the result of trying to bench too much... and subsequent complications... hating on the OUATIH BruceLee scene is lazy... OnceUponATimeInHollywood if we're all being honest about what happened to him.

kaj33 Did he watch the movie title? Once Upon a Time...

kaj33 Now Kareem is getting involved? This is rapidly becoming one of the most overblown entertainment stories of 2019. ComplainerCulture

kaj33 here is bruce lee more profound than philosophers. have that 'arrogant' tarantino watch this if he could grasp lee's world OnceUponATimeInHollywood

kaj33 Makes me so happy that Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood is getting so much press. Quentin Tarantino is a genius and a living legend of cinema working today. It is by far the Best Picture of the year.

kaj33 GREATNESS AND GREATNESS 👏🏿👊🏿✊🏿👍🏿✌🏿

kaj33 Oh, for fuck’s sake! Enough already.

kaj33 ↙️↘️

kaj33 I agree 100% Cap. And the people who don’t understand that it’s racist need to look at stereotypes and the history.

kaj33 In the contexts you are discussing, kja33, plz define 'sloppy' & 'somewhat racist' (or just racist alone), and how Tarantino (and his brilliant picture) embody these. cato

kaj33 i dont think its that serious

kaj33

kaj33 Me thinks thou doth protest way the frank too franking the frank much.

kaj33 Totally fails to demonstrate any racism in what QT did. Stupid movie, not racist movie.

kaj33 Shut up

kaj33 Wtf was “somewhat racist” about it That’s BS.

kaj33 QT way overrated.

kaj33 “Racist”? Literally nothing racist about it and it’s kinda sad people just throw that term in knowing it will them attention. Racist will soon over take “hi” as a form of greeting.

kaj33 grow up

kaj33 Its a fictional respresentation.

kaj33 Guys the movie hasn’t been released internationally yet Stop spoiling

jambie61 kaj33 It was a joke.

jester1436 kaj33 That’s QT though

kaj33 Oh for heaven's sake! Bruce Lee was a great actor but he had zero professional fighting experience. He thought because he could beat people up in movies, it'd translate to real life. False. Chuck Norris would have destroyed him!

kaj33 Good for you Kareem!🏀👍👏

kaj33 So who is going to tell SNL that they have been doing wrong for all these years. Or is that allowed because everyone knows it's fiction and exaggerated interpretation of the real person much like OUATIH.

kaj33 ⚠️ GO BACK ⚠️ If you proceed you will see spoilers.

kaj33

kaj33 God I hope someone makes a movie and portrays Bruce Lee as an overly sensitive loser who spends his days criticizing directors for choices they make when developing characters in a fictional movie. just to spite everyone. This is so ridiculous.

yashar kaj33 FFS, it wasn't a documentary!! It's an allegory, told from a character's perspective, most likely Cliff!! Of course it re-writes history!! That's the freaking POINT!!!!!

kaj33 The guy who used the N-word approximately 1, 729 times in 1 movie might be a 'little racist'? Shocking!!!

kaj33 Heads up!! Jerks in the comments are posting spoilers so preceded with caution.

kaj33 Incredible lede, Kareem.

kaj33 I think this is actually more accurate than the legend pretending that Bruce Lee was some kind of Superman who would have beaten any man on any circumstance. People practicing Martial Arts are very aware that no matter how good you are, you can always find better than you

yashar kaj33 People are now describing a movie that isn't even on the screen.

kaj33 it’s a movie 🍿

kaj33 kaj33 calling someone “racist”? No way?

yashar kaj33 Wow. Even after Hitler was blown to pieces at the end of Inglourious Basterds some people still think that Tarantino's movies are supposed to be taken 100% seriously and are always historically accurate.

kaj33 More a funny than disrespectful sequence. Was Bruce Lee a fantastic Martial Artist? Yes. Was he a big mouth as well? Yes. Besides, in the movie, he faces a former green beret and having a tough time with such an opponent is definitely plausible even for someone like Bruce Lee

kaj33 Forget Tarantino movie. If you want to see best movie about Bruce Lee, its, Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story. This movie was great & showed alot of insight on what Lee had to overcome, as a young asian man in America,at that time in history. A great man & a roll model for anyone!

kaj33 That's a fantastic article that doesn't try to go for cheap claims of racism.

kaj33 It’s a movie where Sharon Tate lives and Manson’s posse is killed by a dog and flame thrower. And they’re complaining about historical accuracy with Bruce Lee

bob_malak kaj33 Oh well, it’s a Movie.

yashar kaj33 So everyone is upset of how Bruce Lee is represented in a movie where Sharon Tate doesn't die? So alternate universe Bruce Lee must act just like our Bruce Lee?

kaj33 Has someone told him it’s a movie, not a documentary, and in said movie it revises history...Even more so in this revised look of LA in 1969 film there are characters that aren’t real...and one of these characters has a flashback from his POV of what never actually happened...?

kaj33 What about Kareem currently? Someone knows? They said he was selling his champion rings from his glorious NBA era

kaj33 I don't know the true, but I like Quentin Tarantino's movies.

yashar kaj33 A fictional narrative is under no obligation to the “truth.” KA-J is smart enough to know this.

yashar kaj33 Yeah Lee's family not too happy about it either...

Bruce Lee's daughter says Quentin Tarantino can 'shut up' or own up'[H]e could apologize or he could say, ‘I don’t really know what Bruce Lee was like. I just wrote it for my movie. But that shouldn’t be taken as how he really was.” - Bruce Lee's daughter on Tarantino just watching the trailers I had a feeling this would be a terrible representation of Bruce Lee. She was 4 when he died. She knows as much about what he was really like as QT does. Lol, lady.

Bruce Lee's Daughter Says Tarantino Needs to 'Shut Up' After His Response to Family CriticismThe 'Enter the Dragon' star's daughter hit back at Tarantino's response to her criticism of Lee's portrayal in 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.' TooFab If you think of film as art...its no different than a caricature artist drawing exaggerated features on a person face. He exaggerated Bruce Lee's 'perceived' attitude. Not to sound like a dick, but she was 4 years old when he died, did she even know the guy? TooFab He should apologize. I used to really like his films, but lately he's been an ass. Not a fan. TooFab Ehhh she kinda the one that needs to shut up. It’s a movie 🤷🏾‍♂️

This Week's 'Shut Up Tarantino' Is Brought to You By Bruce Lee's DaughterI thought Once Upon a Time In Hollywood was a generally good movie, as long as I focused exclusively on the scenes in which hottie Brad Pitt is basically in a buddy comedy with his pitbull Brandy, who steals the entire movie (Margot Robbie, who?!) But not everyone shares my feelings, including Bruce Lee’s daughter, who would kindly like Tarantino to shut up about her dad. I am so done with this non issue That was easily the worst scene of the movie

In my opinion he simply discovered that Bruce Lee is more famous than he is. Where to me that's the real puzzle that he'd have to learn this way.
