Kamala Harris' campaign offers the lesson that candidates must define themselves simply, early and often

THE THREE most recent Democrats to win the White House—Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter—had similar speaking styles on the campaign trail. They were centrist and inclusive, given to hopeful rhetoric, but—most importantly—just opaque enough about precisely what they wanted and stood for to let the broadest possible range of voters project their own hopes and desires onto them. That is trickier to pull off than it sounds.

When she launched her campaign in Oakland in January, before around 20,000 cheering spectators, she praised law-enforcement and criminal-justice reform, promised tax cuts as well as Medicare for All and free college, and she took unimpeachable positions in favour of unity, truth, grandmothers and America. Temperamentally and biographically, Ms Harris was a centrist; stylistically and demographically, she appealed to the party’s younger and more liberal electorate.

She proved gifted at delivering scripted zingers—“That little girl was me”, her reminder to Joe Biden that she benefited from the school-integration policy he opposed; “America does not want to witness a food fight; they want to know how we are going to put food on their table”, bringing a moment of order to an unruly debate in June—but less skilled at thinking on her feet.

Precisely what share of those struggles stemmed from her race and gender is impossible to determine: not none, but not all either. She may have found more success had she stuck firmly to the centre lane, and had her campaign staff remembered that she was running to be president of the United States, not president of left-wing Twitter.

Kamala Harris quitting should not come as a surprise. The system is set up to favor those with money.

She was ended by Tulsi. Ever since that takedown her support was dying. And in this kind od race - even being stagnant Is falling behind. To continue her campaign was to waste money only to fade into obscurity. Ending it now leaves her with some recognition she can use later..

That's right. She's down. Kick her.

Thank goodness

Sure. Funding her senatorial campaign

And she could have been president had she found that one person with whom could sleep in exchange for being appointed to office.

Did Kamala share that with The Economist or is Steven Miller moonlighting for you?

What a pity. Kamala Harris was the only one that could speak the street language to put Donald Trump in his place.

Rationale? Rationale? On top of that she couldn’t find any reason either

Huh? KH's rationale for running was quite simple: A) 'As a black woman...', B) Exerting more control over Americans than what her present job facilitates, C) Big dollars, after presidency, on book deals, speaking engagements, television appearances, etc. There is no mystery here.

This is so demeaning & insulting to her, her campaign staff & the American people who supported her. She had a platform & you should retract this statement.

. There have been and still are plenty of Dems and GOP bereft of a rationale for seeking the presidency other than inflating their own egos. Yet, the media continue to focus attention on a candidate of Color. How about a few disparaging words for all 28 Dems and 3 GOP candidates?

That's why her campaign relied so much on taking down Trump.

Social justice?

Vanity candidate?

Other than naming Ms. Harris, the Economist write-up has no head or tail.

Kamala Harris didn't has a plan for her core supporters. Instead behaved like a spoilt neoliberal brat asking zillion questions

Oh like Steyer and Bloomberg.

She lied and placed immutable characteristics above policy and authentic intent. She followed the DNC orders and was promoted by a bias media that is quickly being exposed for the commercial that it is. Media 'support' hurt her...and race reparations Come on. Big fail.

She assumed she would get black and female votes for being black and female. Nope.

alllibertynews Long overdue

Kamala Harris needs to step into the impeachment process. Her skills will be very important factor in the process.

That’s the second incredibly biased headline from you this morning.

Publicly financed campaigns and she would still be in the race and probably would have won. Stop Citizens United and Hand Marked Paper Ballots NOW!!

They did that, and people said they'd pass.

I think the lesson is: be white and have a penis.

Good point.

And not be a Black woman

Really? How do they work against racism and the media?

OOPS !

shes a cop

She lacked both leadership and character to be a serious candidate. There are serious issues in her district that have to be addressed.

I see that as their failing, not as hers. It’s not as if she didn’t try.

No one cares...

Is that the Racist/Wall St. Wing vs. the Socialist/Big Gov't Wing

Trump is the best president ever
