Religious references can be a bit heavy-handed at times, like the kids acting out a Noah’s ark play while Candy carries out the killing. But others are subtle and less forced, hinting at questions about redemption that will come later. Betty tells Candy to give her daughter a peppermint as a reward for going underwater at her swim lesson. When the girl picks her head up out of the pool, Candy reaches out with the mint in a gesture that looks like communion.
The episode closes with Candy on the witness stand in what would’ve been the old McKinney Courthouse. How she got there remains to be told.Episode 3 But before Episode 3 dives too deep into that storyline, we get more Candy and Allan, opening the episode by coldly going over a checklist of the positives and negatives of having an affair. They also decide that they’ll have to establish boundaries about emotional involvement.
This prompts Allan to break it off with Candy. Candy lashes out in other ways, including a night out at a honky-tonk in an out-of-place glittery jumpsuit. This same Candy, fearing the secret’s out, reaches out to Betty and puts on one of the more uncomfortable baby showers in humankind. In the episode, we mostly see Candy mired in tension, anguish and guilt as new developments come up every day. She slowly begins to empathize with Betty’s family once she sees how Allan and their older daughter deal with their grief.
