What he did , while really crappy, doesn’t justify prison. Big fines, yes. He has ruined his career and made himself a public liar.
Leniency might be considered IF Smollett had simply admitted his duplicity. But he still defiantly claims 'victim' status even though the evidence against him was overwhelming. Note that his early supporters (Michelle Obama, Tina Chen, Kamala Harris, et al) have all gone silent.
But he will be just fine in prison if you know what I mean
