Cash from a bag that was left at the home of a juror in a massive fraud case on June 2 outside Minneapolis. Officials charged five people who are accused of hatching a plan to visit a juror’s Minnesota home this month with a gift bag filled with cash and a promise for more if the defendants in the case were acquitted, they announced on Wednesday.
Three of the people charged — Abdiaziz Shafii Farah, 35; Abdimajid Mohamed Nur, 23; and Said Shafii Farah, 42 — were defendants in the trial over ainvolving two Minnesota-based nonprofits accused of exploiting a federal child nutrition program to bilk the government of some $250 million. Two of those three — Abdiaziz Farah and Nur — were convicted in that case, while one, Said Farah, was acquitted.
The group chose juror 52, a 23-year-old woman, because she was the youngest and because they believed her to be the only person of color on the panel, the indictment states. Over the next few weeks, the perpetrators allegedly scoured her social media profiles and found her address. Then, they made a map of where she parked during jury service, followed her home at least 19 times and purchased a GPS tracking device to covertly install in her car, court documents allege.
