TEXAS — On June 19, 1865, Union troops rode in to Galveston, Texas, freeing the last 250,000 Black slaves — that’s two days after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation into law to eradicate slavery everywhere.

Juneteenth uplifts the hard work of Black influential Americans, while still acknowledging the growing pains that have come with over 400-plus years of racial injustice. It's a chance to commemorate the last freed slaves, celebrate Black culture in its many forms and reflect on our nation's timeline regarding race relations.
