Heavy e-commerce growth in June indicates that new habits are continuing to set in and providers need to prepare for the long haul

The increase was consistent across regions, and category growth mirrored other quarters: Top gains came in gaming and retail , and declines were led by travel and ticketing . Even with the growth, e-tailers are feeling the slowdown in overall spending, with purchase value declining 3% annually in June, which indicates that customers are spending online more often, even if overall dollars are down.

Ongoing gains in online shopping, even as lockdown restrictions ease, could indicate a big-picture shift toward e-tail. Customers can shop in-store, but are still shopping online. Nearly all retail is open, albeit with restrictions, in all 50 US states and most countries worldwide — a stark difference from the spring, when e-commerce surged in part because it was the only option.
