We chat with PerryMason Juliet Rylance and Chris Chalk about season 2 of the HBO series, including Della Street's big cross-examination moment and Paul Drake's home life:

In Perry Mason season 2, Juliet Rylance and Chris Chalk return as Della Street and Paul Drake to help Matthew Rhys' titular defense attorney solve another murder that has rocked 1930s Los Angeles. After the Dodson case resulted in a mistrial, Perry Mason finds himself at odds with his newfound position as an attorney. His decision to try civil cases frustrates Della and Paul, but the death of Brooks McCutcheon will bring Perry back to his roots.

Juliet Rylance: Like you said there was this huge journey and I think it ended in a really good place for Dellam of feeling like, finally, she might have a seat at the table, and be able to move her desk into the main office. And then we begin season 2 and none of that has really happened. Chris Chalk: I actually think it's neither one of those things. I think that Paul is trying his best to survive, and was perfectly happy with the shitty justice pre-Perry Mason. But what Perry did is awaken in him more of himself. He revealed Paul to himself. And so it's like this monster that's like, "Well, s--t. Now that everybody realizes that I'm good at these things, I want to use these things.

Juliet Rylance: I really love the way that that scene just kind of emerged. I didn't know for a long time that we were going to do it. And then in the writing, I love the fact that it's not planned and that it sort of just comes out of the need of the moment, which is suddenly Della realizes, I have more information than Perry does on the floor.

Juliet Rylance: I'm in a position suddenly where I can stand up and almost feel like the moment is shared between us. More than anything else.Juliet Rylance: Never.

But, let’s be honest, none of that really counts. We needed to hear the full story from the man at the center of it all. No, we did not. Remember when Hollywood had class? Not a single person cares about this and I'm afraid I now have to unfollow you for writing about such trivial shit. Do we though? No.
