Joy Harjo has been named America’s new poet laureate by the Library of Congress, The New York Times reports, making her the first Native person to be selected for the post.
Harjo, a member of the Muscogee Creek Nation, started writing as a college student in New Mexico in the early seventies and began meeting poets, including Native American poets, at gatherings around the Southwest. Seeing them perform made her realize that poetry was available to everyone, she told the Times, noting, “It became a way to speak about especially Native women’s experiences at a time of great social change.
Harjo, now 68, has since written eight books of poetry, a memoir, and two books for young readers. She will take over as poet laureate for Tracy K. Smith, joining the ranks of writers including Rita Dove, Louise Glück, Billy Collins, and Juan Felipe Herrera, according to the Times. “I’m still in a little bit of shock,” Harjo told the Times. “This kind of award honors the place of Native people in this country, the place of Native people’s poetry.”
Harjo grew up on Native land in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she was the eldest of four children. “I was told that I was the shyest kid at Indian school, and I liked painting, because I didn’t have to speak,” she said. She grew up hearing many stories about her ancestors, including tribal chiefs. Her 2012 memoir, “Crazy Brave,” unveiled a difficult childhood that included substance abuse and an abusive stepfather, as well as the challenge of becoming a teen mother.
