Graduates received degrees Tuesday at the school's first in-person commencement ceremony in two years.

In addition to Hannah-Jones, New Jersey Health Commissioner Judith M. Persichilli will also receive an honorary degree and speak during an event Wednesday.

“I don’t tell you all this story to say that your stories will all turn out like mine,” she told the graduates. ”I’m lucky to be here ... I do tell you this to say that my success did not come overnight and yours likely won’t either. For people like us it never does.”Rutgers Rites of Passage ceremony

Martinez, whose family mostly resides in Springdale, Arkansas, majored in philosophy, political science and global studies with a minor in Spanish.which places selected scholars in public sector positions in order to create change. In Martinez’s case, she hopes that means focusing on issues that touch on immigration.
