Josh Hawley wants to punish Disney by taking copyright law back to 1909 and that sucks

I have been told to blog about Senator Josh Hawley’s

, and I do this with nothing but the greatest reluctance. Normally, I love talking about copyright! I’ll talk about copyright all day long!But writing this post is agony, because the thought of giving this absolutely asinine piece of legislation any attention is killing me on the inside., and an insult to the democratic process.

The bill would set copyright terms to 28 years for all works going forward. Except, that is, for the copyrights owned by the Walt Disney Company . The 28-year term would applySteamboat WillieThe 28-year copyright term is a throwback to the Copyright Act of 1909.

I disagree with Hawley on everything mostly. But on this one he’s right

Naw, copyright law has been dragged out a little too long thanks to George Lucas and Disney. Things need to re-enter the public domain, and not several decades after you die and can no longer profit directly from it.

I’m not a fan of Hawley, but current copyright law is unfair. Corporations lobbied to extend copyright beyond a reasonable amount of time. This article is an ad hominem attack.

I don't know the specifics of his bill in particular but having things eventually enter the public domain is not a bad thing. Steamboat Willie is over 90 years old. It should have been public domain long ago.

You know it basically just reverts it back to pre-1976 law, right?

If this were to impact everyone I’d be for it but it’s insane to target one company or a few in this way.
