Jon Stewart knows he should've done more to actively support and promote the underrepresented voices of women and people of color while he was the host of The Daily Show

The Daily ShowSpeaking now, Stewart said he initially took great offense at the suggestion thatand his behavior ere sexist. “I was like, sexist? I was raised by a single mother. My mother wore a T-shirt that said, ‘A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle.’ And I’m a man. I grew up in a house where I knew I wasn’t needed.”

But, Stewart added, he soon realized there was more than a little truth to the piece and its premise. “I remember going back into the writers’ room and being like, ‘Do you believe this shit? Kevin? Steve? Mike? Bob? Donald?’ Oh. Uh oh. Uh oh.’”had a policy that removed names from submission packets in an effort to prevent the hiring process from being influenced by gender or race. “But we still kept just hiring white dudes. White dudes from a certain background,” he said.

Jon Stewart on The Daily Show's Lack of Diversity: 'Nobody Likes to Get Called on Their Shit'About a decade ago, Jezebel published a longread on The Daily Show’s writers’ room, which was then a veritable boy’s club with few-to-no women writers or correspondents. The women staffers who did come through told Jezebel they felt marginalized, disrespected, and targeted for firing. Their experience was not necessarily universal—in response to the article, women Daily Show staffers wrote a response praising the “meritocracy” they worked for—but looking at the cast and crew list, there was no question that at the time the show’s writers and correspondents skewed toward men, and white ones at that. cthagod I would prefer Jon Stewart to go back and host The Daily Show.
