Less than 24 hours after Stewart's fiery speech went viral, his fury paid off

—but it was Tuesday’s appearance that proved how much power these monologues can still have.

“As I sit here today, I can’t help but think what an incredible metaphor this room is for the entire process that getting health care and benefits for 9/11 first responders has come to,” Stewart told attendees on Tuesday. “Behind me, a filled room of 9/11 first responders. And in front of me, a nearly empty Congress.” As he continued to speak, his anger grew, and at times gave way to despair as the comedian spoke through tears.

Should it pass, the new bill will extend funding for 70 years. Now that the bill has passed the House Judiciary Committee, Senate Minority Leaderis calling on Republican representatives to support it within the House—and, subsequently, for the Senate to deliberate it as a stand-alone bill. Stewart has been a champion of the 9/11 victim compensation fund since the beginning; in fact, it was in large part thanks to him that the bill passed Congress to begin with back in 2010, when Stewart committed an entiresegment to railing against the conservative senators who had filibustered the bill. Thanks to that segment, the issue

and ultimately passed. Hopefully, Stewart can now pull off an encore to secure its continued funding.

A great example of a person who stands up for what he believes in and refuses to stop fighting. My hero 👏👏👏

JamesPurefoy Further proof that change is possible if you stand you ground and insist on being heard.

thekjohnston If that were the cause and effect, everyone in Hollywood would fly to Washington and fix the country.

You do understand this will never get past McConnell, who isn't allowing bills to be introduced in the Senate, tho, right? This isn't going anywhere. :(

Watch Jon Stewart Shred Congress Over Lack of Health Care for 9/11 First Responders'Sick and dying, they brought themselves down here to speak to no one,” Stewart said. “It’s an embarrassment to the country, and it is a stain on this institution” Thank you to Jon Stewart for speaking out for 911 victims🇺🇸🙏 Americans are into culling the herd, using lack of a universal medical plan to do it. It’s barbaric, but many seem to lack the morals to change that and figure oh well, survival of the fittest! Esp. those with the ability to pay. Funny dat.
