'Joker' and when physical disability is the punchline JokerMovie

There’s Something About Mary

It’s unfortunate that Phillips falls back on these tropes as it overshadows valid critiques on disability culture he wants to make. Arthur visits a social worker as part of an unspecified program only to be told the government has cut funding and there are no discernible means to get him his medication.

What’s worse is how the movie actually does portray physical disabilities as a foil to Arthur’s mental state. One of Arthur’s friends at his job is a little person named Gary . Gary is openly mocked and belittled by another of Arthur’s quasi-friends, Randall . Arthur’s disability, being invisible, is generally ignored or unknown by those who encounter him, making him a target for violence. And yet Gary, who can’t hide his disability, is openly humiliated with no one coming to his defense.

Ugh

and you've missed the point of the movie by injecting your personal politics in a movie that had zero of what you are talking about

You guys have way too much free time...

its valid critiques are on the media! (Like you)

Good grief...watch the movie, enjoy it, don’t enjoy it, move on with your life.

Give it a rest.

it doesnt matter, this was an unoriginal film, disguised as great cinema. Phillips simply took 2 Scorsese films and globbed them together to come off as a Scorsese level director which he isnt. You cant steal all of Richard Pryor's stand up act and call yourself the next Pryor

Does your insistence on “stupid question” tweets undermine all your journalistic credibility?

A lot of people not reading the article. The movie has a lot it wants to say, but relies on cliches to say them.

No, and that admittedly controversial scene to some had a sweet, touching moment in all its brutality in the end between the two characters, Arthur and Gary.

Enough about the joker!! It’s a great movie with great acting and if you can’t separate movies from reality you have a big problem!

I guess I watched a different movie. I didn't see a 'Get Out of Jail Free' pass for this character. No excuses either. Just a sad, dark back story on someone we know to be a villian and how they came to be labeled as criminally insane

I've always pittied the work crtics and thinkers do. Someone does some kind of work. And they just sit back and find a ton of issues-that really mean nothing-with that work.

“The film uses disability as a get-out-of-jail-free card for Arthur's action.” No, it doesn’t. Nothing in the film gives Arthur a free pass. That’s why the violence is so shocking - it’s not cartoon, it’s not comic book, it has real impact. This is a bad, bad take. JokerMovie

No. Hell no.

You keep posting this article and you keep coming up short.

Unfollowed for a super shit post

No

Having a hard time keeping the lights on, are we?

Not Joker, it's you guys really need therapist.

Is all this because you were disinvited to the premiere?

No it's not. Joker's physical and psychological disabilities are hardships, but they are not the butt of a joke, or what turns Fleck into The Joker. You are ignoring the real message of the film that we need to treat each other with respect and empathy & don't forget anyone.

You are saying that it’s a bad move to make that joke of the chain in the door. But didn’t you see the reaction of Arthur? I was expecting him to laugh at him, but instead he said “you were the only one who was kind to me, thank you.” It was not a haha scene but a connection one

I really wonder, whose behind all this production of articles against JokerMovie. If I had a lot of money, I would make a big offer to anyone who could give proof and spill the tea.

But it's the truth tho.. all I see in the trailer was a physically disabled man other than it's mental state ..

So did someone working on jokermovie or someone at wbpictures kill the dogs of everyone working at Hollywood Reporter or something Seriously, I haven’t seen “journalism” this transparently petty and vindictive since high school. Holy shit. Pathetic. Shameful. Go get bent.

Y'all really pulling stuff out of your a**es now...

You do get that by writing articles in sad attempt to bring this movie down you are actually doing free promotion and you are making people go and see it.

BKB29

How much did disney give ya'll to pound Joker? Seriously?

This film needs a restraining order against you freaks.

Where was this article when Thors depression was a running joke in Endgame?

You trades and media are so pressed, it’s quite sad

Whoever wrote this should never post anything on the internet again.

Did you ?

Somehow , and I don't know how this is , but , oddly enough , for some really weird , bizarre , strange reason ..... I don't think that they were trying to be funny .

Hopefully your boss sees these comments and you’re fired, this critique is horrible I’m unfollowing

Really poorly written article here. And contradicts itself throughout. Often points out what the movie should have done, explains a scene that did exactly that and then clumsily adds a generic sentence to claim the film failed.

'Fleck is a villain because he is disabled and being disabled makes him a villan'. It was the cruel way society treated him that made him a villain & not his disability per se. The logic of the central point seems flawed to me. JokerFilm

This is some extreme bullshit.

Right, this is clearly not biased, purely objective, non-opinionated, respectable journalism with blameless integrity and righteousness in every way and absolutely holding no ulterior motive or agenda whatsoever ... Would Joker be proud of you?

Somebody got paid for rhis?

Never seen so many writers go after a movie. Midsommar a movie where a woman literally decides the fate of her ex-boyfriend and burn him alive have not received an afterthought from these people.

Hmmm interesting past reviews for this 'film critic'. Joker = Rotten Tomato and..

Yall r really reaching at every possible angle huh

Jesus another negetive joker headline, it’s daily now...y’all doin ok? Need a hug or something?

The Hollywood Reporter and when Journalism is the punchline.

For fuck’s sake there needs to be a purge soon.

Joker to blue check mark reactionary twitter...

Just stop. The obsession with trashing everything about this movie is beyond ridiculous.

WTF?

Jesus FUCKING Christ, this is just getting fucking RIDICULOUS now. Stop being snowflakes. That scene is there for two purposes 1: It IS funny. 2: It's EXACTLY what one of the movies themes is about: Empathy.

What are you even talking about? Just stop with this fake controversy stuff. I doubt ppl writing these articles have even seen the movie. Have you seen The Departed l? Yeah won best picture! Way more violent than Joker. Also Joker does not make fun of disability. great film

Pathetic attempts at making this movie out to be evil.

The only scene you can argue made fun of a physical disability was the chain on the door and the little person. And you felt the need to write a whole article bitching? Sounds like ure trying your best to torpedo this movie. Glad to see it’s crushing box office records
