Law enforcement sources tell us ... John passed away Friday in San Antonio, this after he was discovered unresponsive in a hotel room. We're told no foul play is suspected at this point, and the cause of death is pending an autopsy.
The family broke the news through a rep, saying ..."With a heavy heart, Gordon Getty announces the death of his son, John Gilbert Getty." The spokesperson adds,"John was a talented musician who loved rock and roll. He will be deeply missed.", died from a heart attack just this past September.-- the oilman whose art collection served as the basis for the Getty Museum in L.A. Not too much is known about JG other than the fact he bounced around in L.A. ...
Rest In Peace John. We were in a ska band together in high school called Rhythm Syndicate and then re- connected a few years ago to make music at his house in L.A. I will remember him as a musician, friend and down to earth dude.

John was friends with Gavin Newsom, though his brother William Getty more so partnered with Newsom to open Plumpjacks with money from the Getty family. (Newsom's dad was one of the guys who helped deliver the famous Getty ransom money to kidnappers in the early 70's.)
