, Santana, Joe Cocker, Sly & the Family Stone, the Who and Joan Baez, among others, they’re also noteworthy for acts they omitted: Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead, the Band, Neil Young and Creedence Clearwater Revival, to name a few.
“By the time we went on it was 2:30 in the morning,” Creedence singer, songwriter and guitarist John Fogerty told The Times in a phone interview. “We played a great set, but there was almost no reaction.” John Fogerty, shown at the Hollywood Bowl in 2015 with his son Shane, is saluting the watershed year he and his band Creedence Clearwater Revival had in 1969.In fact, Fogerty and his modern-day band will perform Sunday at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, near the original Woodstock site in New York State.
I’d seen the Dead live a few times around the Bay Area, and I knew their reputation. At the time, I was what you would call pissed off. They sabotaged our chance in the limelight. But over time, I have developed quite an affection for the Dead. They mumbled their way through a career and they outlasted the Man. They changed the paradigm by doing it their own way, and they made it work. But at Woodstock, they were just a bunch of drugged-out hippies.
Drugs sure are a terrible thing.
That set was still pretty good!
The message of Woodstock 1969.
Woodstock is not about the performers but the idea of peace with music.
This guy.
Fogerty can hold a grudge.
Should’ve taken the brown acid dude
Grow up.
He played a great set at ACL Fest a few years back . One of my favorites ever.
CCRGrateful Dead If you disagree, you are brain damaged or just have terrible taste.
Those sour grapes have turned into whine.
Love Fogerty , I would have loved to see him first !
Wow dude
I'm surprised and happy to read that at least one musician who played at Woodstock in 1969 actually has some crystal clear memories from the event.
John_Fogerty has always been jealous of the Dead.
Amazing interview. Perspective on the past can be so odd. Who would have thought, CCW was the first band signed for Woodstock? But we forget how big they were. All those hits, one after the other. Now Fogerty plays Vegas! Far out 🙂
