Garoppolo played through thumb and shoulder injuries in last season’s run to the NFC Championship Game. A pair of sprains to Garoppolo’s high, right ankle limited him to six games in 2020, and his medical history prompted the 49ers to select Trey Lance No. 3 overall in the 2021 draft as Garoppolo’s expected successor. Lance opened this season as the starter but sustained a fractured ankle in the Week 2 home opener.
The Dolphins scored 10 seconds into the game on a 75-yard touchdown pass from Tua Tagovailoa to former 49ers wide receiver Trent Sherfield. Christian McCaffrey keyed the 49ers’ production on Purdy’s first drive in relief of Garoppolo. McCaffrey, despite a knee issue last game, had four carries for 19 yards and had a 7-yard reception. Also boosting that drive as a Dolphins pass-interference penalty.
Purdy, last draft’s “Mr. Irrelevant” as the final player selected, entered this game with just 18 snaps under his belt. He was 4-of-9 for 66 yards and an interception in the 49ers’ last loss, a 44-23 defeat at home to Kansas City on Oct. 23. His first NFL snap came as he knelt to finish an Oct. 9 win at Carolina, and he took seven snaps in the 49ers’ Nov. 21 win over the Arizona Cardinals in Mexico City.
