Donovan began doing the weekend sportscasts on Channel 3. It didn’t take long for NBC to begin using Donovan on its NFL telecasts as a play-by-play man for regional games.
Donovan was covering the Browns for WKYC during the week, then flying to another NFL venue for the NBC broadcast. The Browns’ previous history under former owner Art Modell was to put a TV guy in the radio booth to call the games. Examples were Jim Mueller, Jim Garner, Gib Shanley, Chandler and Coleman.“Like everybody else … and I mean there was everybody else … I wanted to get that job,” said Donovan. “They had a lot of auditions. They called you into a TV studio. They had a game on tape, and you called it with a different guy.
It didn’t take long for Donovan to establish himself as the voice of the Browns. Fans loved his enthusiasm, even with the miserable teams of the expansion years. He also blended in well with Dieken and Coleman. Donovan’s producer Yakawiak explained: “On TV, the pictures tell the story. You are there to fill in the gaps. On radio, you have to paint the picture with your voice. You are the eyes at the event. Jimmy can switch from one medium to the other making it look easy. It’s not.”
Jim Donovan has been able to earn the trust of various Browns coaches over the years. Here he is shown with Kevin Stefanski. One of Donovan’s most notable calls was “RUN, WILLIAM … RUN!” That was in the final game of 2002 when the Browns were battling for a playoff spot.
