I spent much of the summer of 2021 listening to my dad’s CDs on his old Discman — it was a tangible way to remember him. It became a ritual for me to spin his copy of Willie Nelson’son his cheap Sony D-F200. My shelves spilleth over with box sets, bootlegs, mixes from friends old and new, young bands whose albums I buy from the merch table at live shows. Any disc still works the way it did in 1986 or 1994 or 2007 — no software updates needed, just push a button and go.years.
But it’s an inarguable fact that music sales reached their all-time peak when the CD was king. No audio device did a sharper job of separating fans from their 20-dollar bills. People loved to buy those digital discs, in numbers that look crazy now. We all spent the Nineties going to the “record store” , browsing the racks, taking something weird home, listening all the way through. You invested time and emotional energy, instead of giving up quick as you do with streams.
Don’t even get me started on the CD box set — the best format ever invented to explore artists or genres with a long history. Ray Charles’
BTW the reason you are losing your purchased files is not 'corporate whims' but DRM. More precisely, non-standard files laced with DRM. Let's name the problem here. One advantage of CDs is you can rip them into standard MP3, M4A or FLAC.
Purchasing CDs and albums is the only way these artists make money (except for the big acts who can fill venues). I still buy CDs and albums in addition to downloading music
New to who?! I never stopped buying cds
CDs are shit. Always has been. Always will be.

Hang on, CD's can't be retro yet, we haven't done cassettes. I'll finally have a use for my old biros.
'most functional'? My 3 second anti skip protection that doesn't actually stop the skipping from happening begs to differ.
CDs are great and never went away in my world 😎
I’ve been buying CD’s since 1988 and will continue to do so. I upload them to iTunes and then to my phone (iPod died last The iTunes files also live in my NAS drive to play on my Sonos. The CD’s are always a talking point when people come visit.
From 8-track to MP3, I’ve had them all, and, except for 8-track, I still have the gear to play the media. I like CDs. Sound good. Convenient to play hours of music continuously. Durable. Versatile (can rip). Packaging can be cool.
I love listening to CDs, I will never part with my collection. Going to give his suggestion of listening to the Beatles' Revolver in that order a go.
I gave all mine to good will!
To all the dumb asses who bought vinyl only to regret it. I hope you learned a valuable lesson. I have CD’s I bought in the 80’s that sound just a pristine now as they did then.🤘
I like them (I have some)
Why would cd sales be on the rise? I’m the most old timey person I know on CDs, but I’ve already accepted that this is going to be my last car with a CD player. I don’t even know where you could find a device that plays them, somewhere on the internet I guess?
