Toronto Blue Jays' Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hits a RBI-double against the Houston Astros during the 10th inning of a baseball game Sunday, April 24, 2022, in Houston. The blur began on the journey between first and second base, when the baseball he bludgeoned landed below the batter’s eye and resuscitated a reeling team. Jeremy Peña pounded his chest thrice. He shouted an expletive, stomped on second base and stared back toward center field.
Peña’s heroics carried Houston to an 8-7 win. It prevented a sweep, stopped his team’s four-game losing streak and brought one of baseball’s best closers to disbelief. Jordan Romano had converted 31 consecutive save opportunities, the longest streak in Blue Jays history. Peña did not allow him a 32nd.
For nine innings, the Astros refused to accept it. The Blue Jays played a pitiful game. Four of Houston’s eight runs were unearned. Toronto starter Yusei Kikuchi walked five across 3 ⅔ innings, affording the Astros ample opportunities to seize control. They could not, benefiting more from brutal Blue Jays defense than anything they did themselves.
Kikuchi entered Sunday’s start with a 6.00 lifetime ERA against the Astros but an advantage against one of their most consistent hitters. A strikeout in the second left Michael Brantley 1-for-17 lifetime against him. Toronto attacked Garcia early in counts, keeping his pitch count more than manageable. He entered the sixth at just 50. Garcia sandwiched strikeouts of Cavan Biggio and Bichette with a four-pitch walk to Springer, bringing the lethal middle of Toronto’s lineup to bat.
