Supernatural's Jensen Ackles has explained his initial reluctance to produce and star in prequel series TheWinchesters. 'To be honest, I was like ... if we just connect those dots with a straight line, that's not entertaining. That's boring.'

Supernatural star Jensen Ackles explains his initial reluctance to do The Winchesters prequel spinoff when he and writer Robbie Thompson started to discuss the show. Created by original showrunner Eric Kripke in 2005, Supernatural followed Ackles’ Dean and Jared Padalecki’s Sam Winchester for 15 seasons before airing its final episode in 2020. After the Supernatural finale, it appeared the Winchester’s family business of saving people and hunting things was over.

Back in June 2021, it was announced that Ackles and his wife Danneel would executive produce and develop a Supernatural prequel series through their production Chaos Machine Productions alongside Warner Bros. TV for The CW. Entitled The Winchesters, the series will be written and co-produced by Supernatural alum Thompson and explore the love story of Sam and Dean's parents, John and Mary Winchester.

"To be honest, I was like, 'I don't know if we can do this.” “'Well, we know we have to do this, and we know we have to do that, but if we just connect those dots with a straight line, that's not entertaining. That's boring. That's a simple story. If we connect those dots in a much crazier, wild Supernatural way, then we've got a show.' So that's what we've been doing.

Ackles is currently the only actor from the original series confirmed to return for the prequel. In Supernatural, the older Mary and John Winchester were played by Samantha Smith and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, respectively, while the younger versions were portrayed by Amy Gumenick and Matt Cohen. Following Mary’s death in the Supernatural pilot, not much was known about her life before John.

Drake Rodger has been cast as John and Meg Donnelly as Mary in The Winchesters. It was believed the pair lived a relatively “normal, apple-pie life” during their time together. Told from Dean’s perspective, it will be interesting to see how the prequel series disproves this understanding of Supernatural lore and follows its two main characters as they"put it all on the line to not only save their love but the entire world.

JensenAcklesPL I would think more about the fact that I chose the most hated characters, but there's that too.

I believe in Jensen, Danneel and Robbie and all the cast and crew to bring us an amazing story
