Jennifer Siebel Newsom testifies in Weinstein sex crimes trial

LOS ANGELES — Jennifer Siebel Newsom, a documentary filmmaker and the wife of California Gov. Gavin Newsom, began testifying Monday that Harvey Weinstein had sexually assaulted her when she was an actor starting out in the industry.

On Monday, Siebel Newsom appeared nervous and emotional as she addressed a courtroom packed with observers, news media personnel and sexual assault survivors. “I’m sorry — I just need to take a deep breath,” she said.During Monday’s testimony, Siebel Newsom said that when she had first met Weinstein, she was 31 and working as an actress while producing small films and developing scripts.Weinstein, she said, approached her at an event she was attending.

The article was published a day after The New York Times had broken the news that Weinstein had for decades been paying off women who accused him of sexual misconduct. “I believe every word that was written in The New York Times, because very similar things happened to me,” read the headline on the essay.

Weinstein’s defense lawyer, Werksman, questioned Siebel Newsom’s credibility in his opening statement last month, noting that she could not recall the exact timing of the alleged rape and that afterward, she had stayed in touch with Weinstein.
