Dealer Bob Mnuchin, father of the Treasury secretary, acquired Jeff Koons’s “Rabbit,” for $91 million and set a record for a living artist’s work

The 1986 stainless steel creature bested the $90.3 million paid last fall for David Hockney’s 1972 painting, “Portrait of an Artist .

” It also restored bragging rights to Mr. Koons, who previously held the record with a delivery truck-size version of a different animal sculpture, “Balloon Dog ,” that sold for $58.4 million six years ago.

There any really some misguided idiots out there. That’s a classic case of income inequality. It was probably a Chinese buyer.

This is obscene. Think of all the good that money could have done in communities across America.

There's something inherently obscene in someone spending that kind of $$$$ on a useless item.

Case in point as to why the wealthy are under-taxed. There is no dorky looking Energizer Bunny in this world that is worth $91 million.

Probably laundering money.

Is the art market another way to launder money? Seems like to perfect place for it

Yes and his son is contempt of congress for protecting a serial criminal, habitual liar who happens to be in charge of the of the largest army in the world and who is mentally incapacitated

See what we could all have if we gave up our lattes SallieKrawcheck and helaineolen? TBH I wouldn’t even give up one cup of coffee for that piece of art.

Think of the good that money could do for others.

I like this one...it's easy to see the attraction...it's so shiny lol...now, where's that welder and buffing pad? If the price seems ridiculous, have a try at one...you never know your luck 😉

Great call on this MAGSinCO 😉

I have my signed portrait by a famous living artist and I’ve been waiting for him to kick to see if I can cash in, now I’m wondering?

The same people who complain about a rich guy getting ripped off buying some crappy art piece because it's somehow wasting money are the same who complain about how artists never make money.

That's a great way to launder money

I hope it falls on his son.

Wonder if it cost him $91 to make.

Uh, has anyone checked the Treasury's balance lately?

that is some serious FU money right there.

He could have invested that in tulip bulbs!!!

God Bless America! PhilanthropyMatters

that rabbit’s dynamite!

Does anyone read the article before tweeting? “Mnuchin was bidding for a client.” SMH

I’m gonna guess that the guy who bought this couldn’t care less about this metal rabbit, it’s a ploy for tax avoidance and possible money laundering

How much of the 91 million was gotten by using loopholes to evade taxes? Bet he is not paying much federal taxes!

tantriclens Aaaaaggghhhhh!!!

91M for a rabbit. What were they Munchin?

Time to robinhood these mofos

Can you say “bubble” or tulips. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The beholder has become blind.

Someone is out of their mind!

Humans r very strange creatures.

I initially thought the 'eat the rich' motto was over the top. Now, I have my silverware out.

The emperor really has no clothes Galleries manipulate prices to an extent that would be illegal in most industries. Galleries also bid up the auction price at sales. If an owner sells new bought work on the secondary market the gallery will drop him and never sell to him again

thinking of all the medical crowdfund pages

Money Laundering.

Hope his son makes better decisions than Dad

Stupid.

Awful

Glad to hear it wasn’t gold bars

The story says Mnuchin was the dealer, who bid on the piece for a client. He didn’t “acquire” it.

xref: Why?

Then he lost 91milions... Jeff Koon IS a financial product...a toxic asset ... and Soon...

Wouldn't it be great to have $91,000,000, that's 91 million dollars, lying around to buy some artist's work? If I had that kind of money I would open a homeless shelter or free daycare center to help those in need. Instead he bought a metal bunny! rabbit

I'm in the wrong line of work.

This is absolutely bloody ridicolous...no worse...is just stupidly immoral. There are just more money than sense.

Congratulations to Jeff Koons.

It cost 91 million because there are actually other donks willing to pay almost that much for that same metal rabbit. The fact is, most people suck. We are a selfish, shallow group at our core.

I wonder how many poor kids you could feed with $91 million dollars

Your tax dollars, or what would have been, at work

Jesus more junk that sells for an absurd amount. That money could be better spent on so many things.

Apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Somebody's a sucker.

The kind of money individuals have 🤷🏾‍♀️ and how they choose to use it 🤦🏽‍♀️. SMH

Time to make few more animals ...

So what

Gee, where can Bob stick his $91 million rabbit?

so Mnuchin is another trust fund kid. Great to know.

Just wait until they start trying to get a partial refund while keeping this...

Remember that the vastly wealthy do idiotic shit like this but can still say things like 'universal healthcare is unaffordable'

hoo boy. this ain't gonna be pretty

That would buy a whole lot of school books. Or school lunches. Or pencils. Even iPads, for needy kids. Now I know from whom stevenmnuchin1 obtained his *values*.

Was it sold to a Russian Oligarch to launder money for Trump? Looks like a $12.95 toy.

I'd say what a rip-off, but if he paid for it out of his own free will... it's still a rip-off!

FUCK

$91 mill to waste
