In the three-minute speech, Daniels’ McAvoy, anchor and managing editor within the fictional Atlantis Cable News, bluntly explains the country’s vast shortcomings, thus why America isThat speech saved the show — and the show saved Daniels’ career, the actor reminisced.
“That was the speech I had been waiting 35 years to do,” he said. “You have to hit a home run with it. It was shot on day three of an 18-day shoot for the pilot. There was no guarantee we had a series. People bigger than Aaron Sorkin had gotten turned down by HBO. This was a key day because not only are we going to find out do we have a Will McAvoy but do we have a show.
Top network executives came to the taping that day, Daniels recalled, along with a number of the cast. “Sam [Waterston] later said ‘I just wanted to see if I was going to have a job or not.’ It was all one me,” Daniels said. “I worked my ass off on it. First take, I hit it out of the park. I know that because Aaron walked over to me after take one and he goes, ‘OK, you’re pitching a no-hitter. I’m not going to talk to you.’ And he walked away. That was great.
Jeff Daniels ROCKED in The Newsroom. My all time favorite show.
Two weeks? That’s a lifetime for a daytime actor. Five days a week, they shine.
Someone should invite Jeff Daniels to join one of the soaps for a year. 🤔
Two weeks? What a luxury!
Soap actors have hundreds of pages to learn by heart overnight
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Two whole weeks? Go talk to some soap actors. That's a luxury.
One of my ALL TIME FAV SHOW! I DVR’d it so I could watch it over and over when I want. Aaron Sorkin always brings it. Jeff Daniels won Golden Globe every year for his performance!
Wow. He only had two weeks? He’s so brave.
Wow, he would never cut in the soap world, they memorize 50 plus pages each day, no rehearsal and more times than not one take. Anyone looking for great professionals always prepared should look no further than actors on soaps. Always ready, prepared and ready to act.
Meh
How is getting something 2weeks prior ‘last minute’?
Well in all the responses it want from 25 pages a day to 1000 over a weekend to memorize. Seems a big difference.
Soap opera actors master 600 - 1000 pages of dialogue over the weekend and work more than 8 hours with no ad-libbing, or retakes these days. Some times scripts are tossed and they have re-read new dialogue on set before filming. Jeff Daniels two weeks was a fucking vacation.
Now review Gina Rodriguez’s 8 minute monologue in CWJaneTheVirgin. 🙌
Cry me a river. soap actors have to memorize 40-50 pages of dialogue overnight
Great monologue, great show. But let’s not kid ourselves—two weeks to learn it isn’t last minute! Actors do this every day! He’s great but give that monologue to a stage actor or a seasoned daytime actor and it’s ready in a day.
Ikr! I’m out of control! I don’t know what to do with myself! I’m a mess! 🥵🥵
Put a soap actor in there & they wld of nailed down that speech before the day was over. Nothing against Jef, he’s AMAZING. But soap actors do 40-60 pages a day! Some shows get 2-3 scenes done in a day.
That was a really great show. Wish it had lasted longer.
The show was terrible, and that speech was typical Sorkin fantasy BS, i.e, not good. Still mad it denied Jon Hamm a deserved Emmy that year, by the way.
Daniels is one of the greats with our without this show.
I miss this show
I loved this show…he was so good in it!
Amazing speech by Daniels. It was relevant then, and still relevant today.
Performed very well by Daniels. Doesn’t make much sense though.
He's amazing, probably the only actor and writer who exited The Newsroom with a higher profile than when they started it. Maybe Sam Waterston as well.
I love this show, that speech will always stay in my head. It was the way many of us in the US felt but nobody would say it. The Newsroom never gets old to me.
Always will remember that speech
how did it not end his career? it's insanely bad
We should also note that WE NEED ANOTHER SEASON!
