The series is loosely inspired by American journalist Jake Adelstein’s 2009 memoir, “Tokyo Vice: An American Reporter on the Police Beat in Japan.” The series was created and written by Tony-winning playwright J.T. Rogers.Portrayed by Elgort in the series, Adelstein was the first foreigner working the crime beat for a Japanese newspaper and spent 12 years there. His book was first published in 2009 and has been translated into multiple languages.
Ito plays Miyamoto, a vice detective who is great at his job and knows it. Kasamatsu plays Sato, a Chihara-Kai crime family member, while Yamashita portrays Akira, a professional host who is not as honest as he seems.
They should have cast Kentaro Sakagushi instead of the sexual predator Ansel Elgort.
