JAXA recently signed an agreement with Interstellar Technologies, a startup launch provider, prioritizing them for future contracts.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency is making a significant move to advance space commercialization. The agency recently signed anThis collaboration isn’t limited to Interstellar Technologies. JAXA has also signed agreements with Space BD and Mitsui Bussan Aerospace, both focused on commercial space utilization. These agreements signal JAXA’s commitment to supporting private companies capable of launching satellites developed within its small satellite missions.

“Space technology’s complexity and the limited opportunities for challenges have hindered the expansion of space utilization and industrial growth. JAXA-SMASH presents an innovative opportunity for demonstrating cutting-edge technology with satellites to break through these limitations,” said Interstellar’s CEO Takahiro Inagawa., a successful prototype rocket engine test powered by liquid biomethane derived from cattle manure was carried out by Interstellar Technologies.

Zero utilizes both liquid biomethane and liquid methane as propellants, a combination that offers advantages in low cost, fuel performance, availability, and reduced environmental impact. Interstellar aims to offer competitively priced launches at less than 800 million yen . Their integrated development and manufacturing process aims to offer LEO a cost advantage with a $6,500 per kilogram price tag.Japan’s efforts to cultivate its commercial space launch sector mirror initiatives from other countries. Europe, China, and India also actively foster space industries through policy changes and strategic investments.
