The seditious conspiracy trial against Oath Keepers founder Rhodes and four associates charged in the U.S. Capitol attack is highlighting intelligence failures in the run-up to Jan. 6, 2021.

Jurors in the Washington trial, which is expected to last several more weeks, have received a trove of evidence from prosecutors. That includes Rhodes’ secretly recorded call on Nov. 9, 2020, encrypted messages and surveillance footage from the Virginia hotel where the Oath Keepers stashed weapons for a “quick reaction force” that could quickly run guns into the capital if they were needed.

Jurors also watched video of a speech Rhodes gave in December 2020 in Washington, where thousands of Trump supporters came to rally behind the then-president’s election lies. Rhodes urged Trump to invoke the Insurrection Act, which gives presidents wide discretion to decide when military force is necessary, to call up a militia and “drop the hammer” on the “traitors.

An FBI agent acknowledged on the stand that the bureau first received a tip about the call in November 2020. Pressed by a defense lawyer about why the FBI didn’t investigate at the time, another agent said the FBI receives thousands of tips a day. The tip wasn’t ignored, but was “filed away for possible future reference,” the agent said. The Nov. 9 call appears to have been to discuss plans for a “Stop the Steal” rally in Washington that would happen days later, not the Jan. 6 insurrection.

Vote for anarchy. Vote Republican.

He wore a black cowboy?

The FBI organized the whole thing for the democrats, everyone knows this. Now Trump will be put in prison, people will go crazy and Military next. And Tribunals by the military. A process of some months but all planned.

Gee, I wonder if it had anything to do with who was Commander in Chief at the time? I also am wondering who appointed those who oversaw those agencies. It’s not hard stuff people.

The community of law enforcement and intelligence agencies did not fail on January 6. They allowed everything to happen. The vast majority of police and law enforcement workers support Trump. Enjoy!

Missed warnings—or ignored warnings?

There were no intelligence failures. There is infiltration by people at a minimum willing to look the other way.

Rhodes is a traitor, period. So is his leader, Trump!

Gee if only there were a committee that could get the the bottom of what really happened. Oh wait…

More like willful ignorance

Intelligence failure implies something accidental or incompetence but this was deliberate and planned so call it what it is

🚨Propaganda Alert🚨 How predictable that the AP prints propaganda aligned with that of our top geopolitical enemies who have been smearing our intelligence community for decades. This is about seditious conspiracy, and that's the angle you choose to take, AP? Unsurprising.

For all of the 'missed signs'.... there will forever be a nagging suspicion that someone(s) didn't act because they were playing a part in the (failed) insurrection.

Ignored, not missed

Better luck next time

Dnc helping you write these?

'The Deep State wants a bigger budget and more legal latitude.'

Failures? Everyone knew and nobody did anything. The FBI, Homeland Security, the Secret Service and the White House were all in on it. The media again giving aid and comfort to the fascists in this country. AP you are part of the problem.

Feds have been running that org for a decade +

There were no intelligence failures. As a person on the sideline I knew something was going to happen when so many people assembled on Jan 6th. After the summer of politically supported destruction of cities, those angry understood that rioting is how to get things done.

With the benefit of two years' hindsight, we can all agree Americans would be much better off had the Oath Keepers succeeded.

Failure? No. It was a deliberate decision by those at the top to allow things to happen just as they did. I’m sure the only failure in their eyes was that more people (like Pence, Pelosi, and AOC) weren’t seriously hurt. Violent mobs don’t just randomly have a gallows on hand.

Failures? Yeah, they weren't failures. They were features, not bugs.

Failure for the top down, hard to do your work when you are stopped perhaps.

Failures, abetting, same thing.

They didn't miss anything. They knew it was coming.
