John Russ of Clementine in Castle Hills and pitmasters Ernest Servantes and David Kirkland of Burnt Bean Co. in Seguin compete for Best Chef: Texas.

Mike Sutter/Staff file photoChef John Russ of the Castle Hills restaurant Clementine, which he operates with his wife and pastry chef Elise Russ, and the pitmaster duo of Ernest Servantes and David Kirkland, who own Burnt Bean Co. in Seguin, are vying for the title of Best Chef: Texas in the 2023 James Beard Foundation's Restaurant and Chef Awards.

Russ, Servantes and Kirkland received semifinalist spots in January along with several other notable area chefs. Jennifer Hwa Dobbertin of Best Quality Daughter earned a Best Emerging Chef nod, Marcus Baskerville and his Weathered Souls Brewing Co. was tapped as an Outstanding Bar candidate, and pastry chef Anne Ng of Bakery Lorraine was up for Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker.

Lattoia Massey, AKA Chef Nicola Blaque, of The Jerk Shack and Andrew Ho, Andrew Samia and Sean Wen of Curry Boys BBQ also made the semifinalist cut in the Best Chef: Texas category. In March, the James Beard Foundation announced its nominees, which whittled the pack of San Antonio-area representation down to Russ, Servantes and Kirkland.

San Antonio has yet to bring home a James Beard award, but several area chefs have come close. Bruce Auden of Biga on the Banks, Andrew Weissman during his time as owner of Le Rêve and Steve McHugh of Cured have all received multiple nominations, but none have sealed the deal.
