in Homewood was in the running, along with chefs from three restaurants in New Orleans: Blake Aguillard and Trey Smith of Saint-Germain, Melissa M. Martin of Mosquito Supper Club and Isaac Toups of Toups’ Meatery.

Evans tipped his cap to the other nominees during his speech, and thanked God, his chef mentors, his family, the staff at Automatic and the community of Birmingham for its support. Evans also thanked his wife, interior designer Suzanne Humphries Evans, calling her “the best partner” for his restaurant.

“She designed the seafood restaurant of my dreams,” Evans said, “and then she stayed there to help me open it and run it without ever working in a restaurant. Suzanne, I love you. She’s also, most importantly, the best mother to our baby boy. Hank Evans, this is for you.” Adam Evans of Automatic Seafood and Oysters in Birmingham was named Best Chef in the South on June 13 at the 2022 James Beard Awards. Evans walks to the stage to accept his award at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
