Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Now that Road House 2024 has proven Jake Gyllenhaal is a perfect leading man for ‘80s action movie re-imaginings, there is a string of other reboots and remakes that the star could headline. Road House ’s 2024 remake cast Jake Gyllenhaal as Dalton, a fresh new take on Patrick Swayze’s character from the original 1989 cult classic.
However, Gyllenhaal’s Road House 2024 role proves that he would be perfect in a remake of this largely forgotten hit. Stakeout was a big hit with audiences and critics alike upon release, but its solid reviews were mostly overshadowed by the same year’s darker, grittier Lethal Weapon. With his sardonic Dalton, Gyllenhaal proved that he is now old enough to play a tough, pithy veteran like Dreyfuss’s Chris. Thus, Stakeout could be an ideal fit for the star.
7 Escape From New York John Carpenter’s Sci-fi Thriller Deserves A Gyllenhaal-led Reboot Close 1981’s Escape From New York is one of director John Carpenter’s best-loved movies for a reason. The story of Snake Plissken saving the US President from a nightmarish New York that has devolved into pure barbarism is a gritty futuristic thriller that doesn’t stint on thrills or brutality.
Essentially an even more unhinged and jingoistic spin on Red Dawn’s premise, 1985’s Invasion U.S.A. saw Chuck Norris’s former CIA agent turn himself into a one-man army to stop a Soviet invasion. It’s absurd, reactionary, and ultra-violent, but a Gyllenhaal-led remake that keeps its tongue firmly in cheek could reinvent this forgotten action movie as an ironic, self-aware thrill ride. Given a sense of humor, Norris’s 1985 movie could be reinvented as a hilarious hit.
4 Cobra Gyllenhaal Could Take Stallone’s Infamous 1986 Thriller To Even Wilder Heights Close 1986’s Cobra is so violent and bleak that some critics compared the Stallone vehicle to a straight-up horror movie upon its release. Directed by Rambo: First Blood Part II helmer George P. Cosmatos, Cobra’s bloody, brutal story sees Stallone’s killer cop mow down gang members by the dozen to protect a witness.
If movies like Enemy, Nightcrawler, Velvet Buzzsaw, and Donnie Darko have proven anything, it is that Gyllenhaal isn’t afraid of playing oddball roles. The Hidden could reinvent his screen persona by allowing the star to play a hero who is unlike any of his earlier characters. Meanwhile, Sholder’s original movie provides a premise that has built-in conflict and endless opportunities for inventive action sequences thanks to its body-hopping villain.
