The attorneys for a 79-year-old man vindicated for a wrongful conviction in the 1970s called for the city of Jacksonville and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office to “right this wrong.”

Local News– The attorneys for a 79-year-old man who had his sentence vacated following a wrongful conviction in the 1970s called for the city of Jacksonville and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office to “right this wrong.”

“Mr. Williams received relief when his sentence was vacated. Though admissible into evidence in the 1970s, the State did not disclose to the defendant’s attorneys that investigating detectives used hypnosis during their investigation. This failure resulted in the defendant receiving a new trial. With the passage of time and the loss of critical witnesses, the State could not proceed.

“I think the time is to call in the folks of the city government of Jacksonville to write this wrong and ensure that Mr. Williams received the compensation he’s entitled to. He’s had 45 years of his life, almost half a century stolen from him,” Paul Wright, human rights defense attorney said., a nonprofit that advocates for innocent prisoners to obtain their freedom, stepped in and worked to vacate his judgment and sentence.

“I’m just happy and proud to be in good health, a sane mind and trying to move on with my life,” he said.
