Texas Rangers pitcher Jack Leiter delivers during the sixth inning of a spring training game against the Kansas City Royals at Surprise Stadium on Friday, Feb. 23, 2024, in Surprise, Ariz.DETROIT — The ascension was supposed to come quickly, smoothly and with a whole heap of gravitas. That, at least, was the hope when thetabbed this polished right-handed arm out of Vanderbilt to anchor their starting rotation. It doesn’t always work out that way. It didn’t in this instance.
It’s not an exaggeration to say that Leiter hadn’t struggled prior. He was an All-American at Delbarton High in Morristown, N.J. He yielded a 0.65 ERA in 117 1/3 high school innings pitched before he signed with Vanderbilt, earned All-American honors as a freshman and entered the 2021 draft as one of the most heralded, most polished college arms in recent years.
Leiter is, indeed, better. He proved himself capable in spring training, then worked a 3.77 ERA and a 25-to-3 strikeout to walk ratio in his first three starts of the season for Triple-A Round Rock. He generated 18 swings-and-misses in his last start for the Express on Friday, struck out 10 batters, walked none and reached 98.2 mph with his electrifying fastball.
