Oklahoma judge finds Johnson & Johnson liable in opioid epidemic, ordering $572 million damages

Still, J&J said it would appeal, and seek to put payment of the award on hold during the appeal process.

Oklahoma alleged that J&J’s marketing practices helped fuel the opioid epidemic by flooding the market with painkillers. The trial came after Oklahoma had resolved claims against OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma LP in March for $270 million and against Teva in May for $85 million, leaving J&J as the lone defendant.

Some plaintiffs’ lawyers have compared the opioid cases to litigation by states against the tobacco industry that led to a $246 billion settlement in 1998. The state’s lawyers called J&J an opioid “kingpin” and argued that its marketing efforts created a public nuisance as doctors over-prescribed the drugs, leading to a surge in overdose deaths in Oklahoma.

greta I guess j and j wrote the prescriptions, sued the wrong one.

rainbowsb7 The free rides are over folks. No more buying yourself freedom and justification. If HRC can’t neither can anyone else. She’s always been above reproach but things change TRUMP changed them.

greta Small price to pay for all the destruction created!

$0.5B? That’s 1/100th of a Bernie.

greta Yes they produced the drug but as a nurse the government AKA The Joint Commission pushed pain medications to increase patient satisfaction yes pain was added as the 5th vital signs so what becomes of the gov’t The Joont Commission?

greta This is so unfair. People have to be responsible for over taking their meds. The blame is on the people/patients. I've been taking opioids for 2 yrs and not addicted, because I knew from the beginning to be careful.. addictive people get addicted to any meds.

Oklahoma Ranks 6 In U.S. -- alcohol is responsible for one in every 10 deaths of Americans aged 20 to 64. A report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds ---

greta Doctors write the prescriptions & pharmacists fill them, not the drug companies so too remote to hold big pharm liable. Sadly we don't hold people responsible for their actions. How many didn't lose weight for that bad back or do their PT cause it was easier to take a pill...

greta Now this is a Judge that has applied the law and has used the law to protect the lives of 10s of 1000s of US citizens...Thank You, your Honor.

Million? Might as well just be dollars then....

greta Whoa ! That is a lot ; however does not bring back lives lost or destroyed !! Keep America Great 🇺🇸⚖️

greta That's a start

greta Wonder if any of that money will find its way to my family? Doubtful

greta It’s GE doctors not the makers. And don’t expect a dime to help anyone with opioid issues. Same happened with tobacco money

Okay good start

greta How about the physicians prescribing Dilaudid to know known drug seeking patients?

greta Wonder why drugs are so expensive?

And when are the weapon manufacturers going to be judged for all the mass-shootings “Crickets sound”... Yeap... that’s how twisted the US mindset is.

Unless affected families have legal representation, they likely won’t see one red cent of this.

that is ridiculous.

They will that money in like 2 weeks

Crazy

The judge is from ou and the ag is from the swamp. There is a war on drugs alright and it's not at the border!

I think this is absurd, because it was not their intention to have people get hooked on drugs

Product liability can be a bitch Sure it will be appealed but if proven contributed to problem unfortunately it’s only $$$ but has consequences J&J are huge supporters of Trump, so how long before the President responds to this ruling? Be interesting to see where the appeals go. J&J could not have marketed their products without FDA approval. Does OK (or any state for that matter) have the authority to hold a company 'liable' for distributing a product approved by the FDA?
